Navarone is an island off the coast of Greece. It is more commonly known as the island of Leros and is a historical World War II site. The Battle of Leros in 1943 served as the inspiration for the movie, "The Guns of Navarone." British and Italian troops were stationed as peacekeeping forces on Leros during the war and co-existed with little “The Guns of Navarone,” with sales of 400,000 copies, launched him into the big leagues. He would write more than thirty books, with overall sales of 150 million copies. Thus, he had a true knack for writing an entertaining book which would present a worldview that his many readers were comfortable with.
